1. Confirm all three dimensions
Verify shaft diameter, housing-bore diameter and seal width. Even a small dimensional error can cause leakage, poor fit or premature failure.
2. Match the material
NBR is commonly used with oils and grease in general machinery. FKM supports higher temperatures and more aggressive fluids. Silicone retains flexibility across a wide temperature range but must still be checked against the application.
3. Check operating temperature
Excess heat can harden, crack or shrink an unsuitable seal. Use the equipment's real operating range rather than ambient temperature alone.
4. Understand pressure
Standard rotary oil seals generally suit low-pressure service. Higher pressure may require a reinforced or pressure-rated design.
5. Consider shaft speed and surface
High speed increases lip friction and heat. Shaft finish, concentricity and lubrication condition also influence seal life.
6. Account for the environment
Dust, moisture, abrasive particles and chemicals may justify a double-lip seal or an additional exclusion feature.
